How we calculate a trip
1Flights
The cheapest round-trip fare found for your route and month in recent searches on Aviasales (via Travelpayouts), per person, times the number of travelers. Prices are cached, so we label them “from” and show the date they were found.
2Stay
The average nightly price of a hotel room for your travel style (budget, mid-range or comfort), times the number of rooms (one room per two travelers) and the number of nights.
3Daily spending
Food, local transport and activities per person per day, for every day of the trip (nights + 1).
The total is shown with a likely range of 15% either way, because real prices move with dates, neighbourhoods and how you travel.
Example: 7 nights in Lisbon for 2, mid-range
- Stay: €98 a night × 1 room × 7 nights = €686
- Daily spending: €76 per person (food €48, transport €6, activities €22) × 2 travelers × 8 days = €1,216
- Flights: added from the cheapest fare found for your route and month.
Where the numbers come from
- Daily costs: current local prices from Numbeo (restaurant meals, coffee, transit tickets, taxis), turned into a daily budget with the same formula for every city so they can be compared fairly.
- Hotels: average nightly room prices by hotel class from BudgetYourTrip, converted to euros.
- Flights: cached fares from real searches, via Travelpayouts and Aviasales.
- Currencies: European Central Bank reference rates, via the open-source Frankfurter API.
- Weather: long-term monthly averages (typical high, low and rainfall, mostly 1991–2020) from each country's national weather service, as published in the climate tables on Wikipedia.
City costs were last researched in October 2026. Each destination lists its sources, and we review the most popular ones every six months.
How we make money
Trip Cost Planner is free. When you click through to book a flight or a hotel and complete a booking, we may earn a commission from the booking site, at no extra cost to you. Links that can earn us a commission are marked as sponsored. Partners never pay to change our estimates or rankings: the explorer always sorts destinations by total cost.
Good to know
Our numbers are planning estimates, not quotes. Flight and hotel prices change quickly, so always check the final price on the booking site before you pay.
